One or two makers
The Explore Kit has a Safe-Saw, a Scru-Driver, 48 screws and a bonus Mini-Tool in a toolbox. Makedo's guide puts it at one to two makers, a good first kit at home.
Explore Kit, CA$32.99
Makedo makes tools for building with cardboard. The Safe-Saw cuts, the Fold-Roller scores folds, and reusable Scru and Scru+ screws join up to three or five layers of corrugated cardboard with a few turns of the Scru-Driver, so there is no glue or tape. Kits run from the 36-piece Starter Kit to the 360-piece Invent Kit, which Makedo sizes for about 12 to 24 makers at once, for classrooms, makerspaces, libraries and families. iDesign 365 is an authorized Canadian Makedo reseller, with prices in Canadian dollars and school purchase orders welcome.

I bought several of these kits to put together a classroom kit for when I do school visits. Makedo is a great STEAM tool for all ages! I use these with Pre-K up through high school. It's a must have for any STEAM educator!

My class thought it was amazing and can't wait til it comes out again. Lots of creativity and teamwork to create.
JanelleMakedo Discover Kit
I am a big proponent of hands-on activities in my class. I bought two of these, and my students have loved them!
Beth LynnMakedo Discover Kit
Gives agency to kids to make and create without prescription. Equally fun for adults. The simplicity and thoughtfulness of the design is exceptional
EleanorMakedo Explore Kit
We just save random boxes from Amazon and other places and our 4 year old cuts them up or rips them and uses these to construct all sorts of odd creations. Highly recommend this to anyone with a creative kid.
KristinMakedo Starter Kit
Can be a little hard to push in so adult should be by to help but they really work! We have had so much fun making forts and they can be used over and over.
RandyMakedo Explore Kit
The girls (ages 7, 6 & 4) have had fun making a backpack and a great house for their cat. Kitty loves to hide from them!!
BobbiMakedo Explore Kit
I'm a little disappointed that the tools to punch through cardboard aren't a bit sharper. My grandkids need a lot of help. But it's a great idea and we've got some things made. Looking forward to making more.

Makedo is a cardboard construction system for kids: a small set of tools and reusable plastic screws that turn shipping boxes into houses, costumes, vehicles and classroom projects. Every tool is made for cardboard, and every part can be taken apart and used again.
Makedo is built for classrooms, makerspaces, libraries and homes. A kit needs no power and no glue, so it works on a classroom floor as well as at a kitchen table, and the screws come out at the end of the build so the next class can use them.
iDesign 365 carries the four Makedo kits, the three single tools, the Mini-Tool 12-pack and three Scru refills, all priced in Canadian dollars. Kits, single tools and refill screws for classrooms, makerspaces and homes are all here in one place.
Use the Scru only with the Scru-Driver, the Mini-Tool or Makedo's 3D-printed Scru-Bit. Makedo says metal tools such as socket wrenches and power driver bits damage it beyond repair.
The company behind it

Makedo started at home. Paul Justin, an industrial designer in Melbourne, Australia, invented it when his children asked him to help make props for their play, such as shields, helmets and a castle with a working drawbridge. Makedo was established in 2009 and is run by Paul and Claire Justin as co-CEOs; the company describes itself as a values-driven family business. The tools are designed in Melbourne and made in China.
Makedo's cardboard construction system won a Golden A' Design Award in Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design (2018 to 2019) and a Platinum award at the MUSE Design Awards 2019. An earlier Makedo Explore kit has been in the Young V&A's permanent collection since 2022, and the Discover Kit was on Smithsonian Magazine's list of the ten best STEM toys to give as gifts in 2022, picked by engineers at Purdue University. An earlier Makedo toolkit also won a Platinum A' Design Award (2016 to 2017).
iDesign 365 is an authorized Canadian Makedo reseller. We carry all four kits, the single tools, the Mini-Tool pack and Scru refills, priced in Canadian dollars, and we work with schools on purchase orders and quotes.
Three steps, one box
Cut panels, doors and windows with the Safe-Saw. Its stainless steel blade has no sharp edges and moves through cardboard by making small micro-tears instead of slicing. If the design needs a fold, score it first with the Fold-Roller.
Hold the pieces where you want them joined and punch a hole through the layers with the Scru-Driver or a Mini-Tool.
Drop a Scru into the socket on the end of the Scru-Driver and turn it a few times. A Scru joins up to three layers, a Scru+ up to five. A few turns the other way and it comes out, ready for the next build.

Contents and maker counts are Makedo's own guide. Explore's 50 pieces do not count its bonus Mini-Tool. Scru joins up to 3 layers, Scru+ up to 5. The Starter Kit has no saw or Scru-Driver: it is screws and one Mini-Tool, so it suits a first try or a top-up. Every kit is recommended for ages 5+.

The Discover Kit has two Safe-Saws, a Scru-Driver, a Fold-Roller, two Mini-Tools and 120 screws in a toolbox, for two to five makers building together. It is Makedo's choice for home use.
Discover Kit, CA$43.99
The Invent Kit has 14 Safe-Saws, 7 Scru-Drivers, 7 Fold-Rollers, 12 Mini-Tools and 320 screws, which Makedo says keeps about 12 to 24 makers busy at the same time. For 25 to 30 students building at once, we suggest two kits, or one kit with groups taking turns.

For teachers and makerspaces

Makedo sizes the Invent Kit for a class: 360 pieces with 14 Safe-Saws, 7 Scru-Drivers, 7 Fold-Rollers and 12 Mini-Tools, enough for about 12 to 24 makers working at the same time. The Mini-Tools are there for the moments when many hands are joining at once, and the Scrus come out at the end so the next group can reuse them.
Makedo's Resource Hub is free. Start with How To Use The Makedo Tools and the printable Starter Guide, then the Maker Academy guides on cutting, joining, cardboard flutes and triangular braces. Design challenges such as Give Me Shelter, Sturdy Place to Sit and Toy Transporter come with objectives, steps, reflection questions and a standards table, and 21 lesson plans and challenges list links to the Ontario curriculum, from Science and Technology and Mathematics to Language, the Arts, and Health and Physical Education.

Cut, then connect

Makedo's Safe-Saw cuts cardboard by hand, and its real strength is joining: Scru screws hold the pieces together and come out again. Some makerspaces also want a powered cutter for curves and circles; that is the ChompSaw, a kid-safe cardboard cutter with no exposed blade, made by Chomp Shop.
Our suggestion: cut with the ChompSaw, connect with Makedo. Our ChompSaw Maker PLUS bundle puts a ChompSaw, its Maker Bundle tools and a Makedo Invent Kit in one order.
Chomp Shop and Makedo are separate companies. The pairing is our suggestion, not Makedo's.

Questions

Makedo is a set of tools and reusable plastic screws, made for kids, for building with cardboard. The Safe-Saw cuts, the Fold-Roller scores fold lines, and the Scru-Driver or Mini-Tool punches holes and turns Scru and Scru+ screws that join up to three or five layers of corrugated cardboard, with no glue or tape. Kits run from the 36-piece Starter Kit to the 360-piece Invent Kit for classrooms.
Saw the shape you need with the Safe-Saw and score any folds with the Fold-Roller. Then punch a hole through the layers with the Scru-Driver, drop a Scru into the socket on its end and turn it a few times to join the pieces. A few turns the other way releases the Scru, so every part can be used again.
No. Makedo is an Australian company. It was invented in Melbourne by industrial designer Paul Justin and established in 2009, and the tools are made in China. iDesign 365 is a Canadian store and an authorized Makedo reseller, with prices in Canadian dollars.
Makedo recommends the system for ages 5 and up, and every Makedo product is independently safety tested to an age grading of 3+. In Makedo's words, children aged 4+ can make with the assistance of an adult, and children aged 7+ can make independently.
The same as the rest of the range: Makedo recommends it for ages 5+, and it is safety tested to an age grading of 3+. The Starter Kit is 28 Scru, 7 Scru+ and one Mini-Tool. The screws are small parts, so the pack carries a choking hazard warning.
Makedo is not made for toddlers. Makedo says children 3 years or younger are not advised to have unsupervised access to it, and the Scru and Scru+ screws are small parts with a choking hazard warning. It recommends Makedo from age 5, and from age 4 with an adult helping.
Makedo describes the Safe-Saw as a steel blade with no sharp edges, made to saw cardboard, not fingers. It moves through cardboard by making small micro-tears rather than slicing, so it will not cut material laid flat the way a box cutter does, and the softened edge it leaves reduces paper cuts. Makedo's tip: never saw towards the face.
Yes, says Makedo. Its products are tested by an independent laboratory and conform to Canada's Toys Regulations (SOR/2011-17), as well as USA CPSIA and ASTM F963, European EN-71 and Australia and New Zealand AS/NZS 8124. Makedo is made without PVC, BPA, phthalates or lead.
The Safe-Saw and Fold-Roller have high grade stainless steel blades that, Makedo says, need no sharpening over time. The tools and screws are reusable, and Makedo says every version of the Scru since 2013 works with today's tools. Makedo does not publish a warranty period.
Yes. Turn a Scru the other way with the Scru-Driver or Mini-Tool and it comes out, ready for the next build. Makedo's own cycle is find a box, make, play and reuse. Use only Makedo's tools on the Scru: Makedo says metal tools such as socket wrenches and power driver bits damage it beyond repair.
Makedo's own guide: the Explore Kit (50 pieces) for 1 to 2 makers, the Discover Kit (126 pieces) for 2 to 5 makers at home, and the Invent Kit (360 pieces) for about 12 to 24 makers in a classroom. The Starter Kit (36 pieces) has no saw and suits a first try or a top-up. The comparison table on this page lists every piece.
Makedo says one Invent Kit keeps about 12 to 24 makers busy at the same time, with 14 Safe-Saws, 7 Scru-Drivers, 7 Fold-Rollers and 12 Mini-Tools. For a class of 25 to 30 all building at once, we suggest two Invent Kits, or one kit with groups taking turns at a building station. Scru Combo 160 packs top up the screws through the year.
The Scru joins up to three layers of corrugated cardboard; the longer Scru+ joins up to five. Both turn with the same Scru-Driver or Mini-Tool. We stock refills on their own: Scru 180 at CA$18.15, Scru+ 120 at CA$18.15 and the Scru Combo 160 (120 Scru and 40 Scru+) at CA$21.99, plus the Safe-Saw, Fold-Roller and Scru-Driver singly and a 12-pack of Mini-Tools.
Corrugated cardboard, the kind shipping boxes are made of. Makedo's guide says foam and corrugated plastic are better cut with a sharp blade, fabric needs other tools, and rigid plastic thicker than 1 to 2 mm will not take a Scru. Makedo does not sell cardboard, so start saving boxes.
Yes. Makedo's Resource Hub is free. Its 19 design challenges, 13 Maker Academy guides and 8 of its 24 lesson plans are open to anyone; the other lesson plans and the quick activities open with a free account. Twenty-one lesson plans and design challenges list links to Ontario curriculum documents, including Science and Technology, Mathematics, Language, the Arts, and Health and Physical Education.
Anything a box can become. Makedo's step-by-step videos in the project ideas above cover a box house, a race car, a puppet, a UFO costume and a windball. In class, Makedo's design challenges include a sturdy place to sit, a toy transporter, a cardboard arcade and a housing design.
Right here. iDesign 365 is an authorized Canadian Makedo reseller and carries 11 Makedo products: the Invent, Discover, Explore and Starter kits, the three single tools, the Mini-Tool 12-pack and three Scru refills. They do different jobs. The ChompSaw, made by Chomp Shop, is a powered cardboard cutter. Makedo cuts by hand with the Safe-Saw, and its main job is joining: the Scru screws hold pieces together and come apart again. Our suggestion for a makerspace is to cut with the ChompSaw and connect with Makedo, and our ChompSaw Maker PLUS bundle (CA$649) includes a Makedo Invent Kit. Chomp Shop and Makedo are separate companies; the pairing is ours. See the ChompSaw page.
